Note the two figures in the background. This is the original version of the cover art.
Michael remastered the image a few years back for Brandon Sanderson, who was a huge fan of the book, because we had sold out of the original print—an edited version of the cover.
Last year, we reissued the original image as an open edition print, which is available in our shop.

PASSAGE: VERGE (1989) by Michael Whelan
I had the pleasure of meeting Brandon Sanderson last weekend at a signing for his new book Firefight. It’s crazy that it took this long to meet him. I bought his debut novel the week it was released in hardcover, and I spent several years handing his books to any reader looking for a recommendation—and many who weren’t!
Not only is Brandon a talented writer with a lot of interesting things to say about the craft, he’s also an extremely nice guy. I’m glad I had a chance to chat with him.
I knew Brandon had previously written about how Michael’s cover for Dragonsbane by Barbara Hambly sparked his interest as a reader. What I didn’t know is that Elantris, Brandon’s first published novel, was inspired by a Whelan fine art painting as well…PASSAGE: VERGE.
