KICKSTARTER UPDATE
Someone wrote to inquire about the availability of BEYOND SCIENCE FICTION, the book companion to Michael Whelan’s exhibition in Riverside, CA last year.
The last time I blinked it was November and I’d just finished my final editorial dive through PDF proofs so I thought I’d check in with Bob Self and Baby Tattoo Books on where we’re at.

I’m excited to see this book in print. The quality of images Michael provided is top notch, and I can tell you firsthand that the digital proofs look fantastic. You can see a teaser of the layouts by Mark Berry in the photos attached.

1200 Backers—Last Stretch Goal Near!
The Kickstarter for BEYOND SCIENCE FICTION is approaching the last stretch goal, less than 6k away from 125k. The campaign has been wildly successful, and we can’t express enough the appreciation we have for Michael’s fans getting behind this very special project.
There’s just 15 hours left to pledge, so if you’re thinking about getting on board now is the time to grab some of the great exclusive rewards that Michael and Baby Tattoo Books are offering.

Final tally on the Kickstarter was 1,269 wonderful backers pledging an amazing $123,627, that’s over 10 times the initial goal of the project.
Many thanks to Bob Self for spearheading the Kickstarter and curating the upcoming exhibition at the Riverside Art Museum, to Mark Berry and the staff at Baby Tattoo Books for producing the companion book to the show, and most importantly to all the fans who made this project a reality.
The “Beyond Science Fiction” exhibition will run from February 11 into May so there is a loooong window of opportunity to see a selection of paintings that span Michael’s illustrious career.
I can’t stress enough what a wonderful experience it is to see a Michael Whelan painting in person. We hope to see you at the opening and would love for you to share stories and photos of your experience.

This figure study for SEAWALL is the last original art reward available for the BEYOND SCIENCE FICTION Kickstarter which closes at noon on December 21.
Final painting and detail are included here for reference.
While the girl certainly is the focal point of the painting, I have to say that the detail in the water that Michael captured really is the unsung hero of this piece.
This is one of the paintings you *have* to see in person to fully appreciate, and luckily it will be on public view at the Riverside Art Museum in California starting in February.

BEYOND SCIENCE FICTION: THE ALTERNATE REALISM OF MICHAEL WHELAN
This 15 second teaser for BEYOND SCIENCE FICTION was produced by Mark Berry at Baby Tattoo Books. Mark is designing the companion book that collects all of the paintings that will be on display at the Riverside Art Museum.
As you can see from these layouts, Mark is exploring interesting connections between paintings. The book promises to be much more than just a simple catague of the show.
100K STRETCH GOAL REACHED!
The Kickstarter just hit the 100k stretch goal, and we’re over the moon excited about the exhbition in Riverside, CA which opens February 11, 2017. We’re also very close to another huge milestone with 1k backers.
