This will be a great opportunity for European fans to meet Michael and view the iconic cover art for such books as FOUNDATION, STORMBRINGER, and THE SNOW QUEEN.

Lucca Comics & Games is an annual convention in Tuscany. It is the largest comics festival in Europe with attendance last year topping 270,000—that’s 100k larger than San Diego Comic-Con!
PLEASE NOTE: Our staff will be in Italy with Michael working this fantastic event. Any orders through the website during that time will be shipped after we return on November 11. Thanks!

THE DEVIL’S BRIDGE (2017) by Michael Whelan painted for Lucca Comics & Games.
I found this painting in studio for a different reason than most. It wasn’t in storage; Michael just finished it earlier this year for his appearance in Lucca, Italy in November. There he will be exhibiting 35+ of his painted works. Obviously this presents a great opportunity for European fans to see his originals in person.
The bridge that lends the painting its title is a famous landmark. Like similar bridges found in Europe, there’s a legend behind it that involves tricking the devil to get across. Here we see kids and a teenager tricking skirting around the bridge on their way to the comic festival.
Michael was asked to add another detail to the illustration…a maze. Cleverly he added it to the girl’s shirt.

Translated from the post on Lucca Comics & Games website:
The author of the 2017 poster is Michael Whelan. The US artist, among the most prominent living fantasy artists, has over 40 years of career created the cover of the leading authors of fantastic literature such as Isaac Asimov, Stephen King, Brandon Sanderson, and rock cover albums…Whelan will be present at Lucca and to whom will be exhibited an exhibition at Palazzo Ducale.
The bridge in the background is the marvelous Ponte della Maddalena, built in the XI century at the doors of Lucca, and better known as the “Devil’s Bridge” for the legend accompanying it. Whelan has been able to find a monument with an intriguing past, which attracts the attention of both historians and “nerd” more attentive. The poster (elaborated in collaboration with Studio KmZero) also looks at the cinematic and television sagas of the 1980s, pointing to an adventure of which visitors live the remake every year in Lucca.
The slogan of this edition is Heroes, that is Heroes. Not just comic books, electronic games, card games or role play, but above all those who build, participating in, the biggest European event community - its viewers. And just these heroes will be celebrated during the 51st year of Lucca: the enthusiasts will be the real protagonists along with their favorite authors, also the other heroes of the event.
Lucca Comics & Games 2017 is preparing to become an enchanted universe in which, to paraphrase David Bowie, each one “can be hero, even just for … 5 days!”
