The best of both worlds. In 1989, I had set aside a month to do a painting for myself when I got a call about doing the cover for an Arthur C. Clarke short story collection. I was able to use the painting for the cover with one minor change - the publisher wanted me to replace the egg with a little spaceship. I painted the egg and then painted the ship on a piece of removable tape over it. When I got the painting back from the publisher I peeled off the tape.

It is frequently assumed that if we try hard enough, there are no limits to our understanding of the universe. As wonderful a thing as the human brain is, there is a finite number of neurons and synapses available to store information and inform decisions, just as we have a certain set of perceptual tools at our disposal (sight, hearing, taste, etc.).  

For example, we have no foundation in which to understand the electromagnetic sense perceptions of certain aquatic animals, because we have no analogous organs of our own. So there are limits to everything human, and that includes intelligence and the ability to understand. We may be as incapable of a deep understanding of the universe as dogs are of algebra, but we’ll undoubtedly keep trying.

Looking for sketching subjects, I started to seek out sculptures of angels and enjoyed using them as models. Not knowing why they particularly attracted me, I guess you could say I went ahead and painted them on faith, knowing that the deeper meaning would become more apparent to me as time went on.
