THE GUNSLINGER: THE TEMPLE OF THE ORACLE (1982) by Michael Whelan
Acrylic on Illustration Board - 20” X 30”
In this double-page spread from THE DARK TOWER: THE GUNSLINGER, the hero has just taken Mescaline. Michael suggests the heightened awareness fed by the drug in the exaggerated texture of the rocks, the psychodelic greens of the foliage, and the skull face Roland sees in his reflection in the water.

THE GUNSLINGER FOLLOWED (2005) by Michael Whelan
Oil on Canvas - 25” x 40”
The Man in Black fled across the desert and the Gunslinger followed. The second half of the first line in the first book. The 2 characters couldn’t be in the same painting because it’s not until they are out of the desert that they come within sight of each other, so he split the sentence into 2 paintings. Michael has said that this is the closest to what he thinks Roland looks like - dogged, grim, with an indomitable sense of mission.

Shopping on Black Friday can be rough. Be careful out there and watch out for mutants. A message from your friends at tumblr.michaelwhelan.com.
Stephen King got a chuckle out of this last year, but not many people saw the post in the midst of the holiday frenzy, so I thought I’d re-post it a few days earlier this year. Enjoy!

THE DARK TOWER: ELURIA’S GATE by Michael Whelan
This was originally created for a title page in LITTLE SISTERS OF ELURIA (Artist Edition), with the area under the gate left blank for the title lettering. A few weeks ago, Michael got it out of his files for us to frame, and he gave us a bonus - he added Roland on the horse. A painting both old and new!
Stephen King recently said in an interview,“ I’m not done with the Dark Tower.” Obviously, Michael agrees.
